Sterlizia

Strelitzia is famous owing to the particular shape color and shape of its flore. It is doubtless the most original flower among those flowers which are to be grown indoor. Strelitzia originates in southern Africa but it can also stand more difficult climates. Five species of Strelitzia are quite common and grown indoor, the most common of these species is the “Strelittzia Reginae” which is also called "bird of paradise flower” because of the elegance of its bracts and of its asymmetrical petals. Strelitzia Reginae grows up to 90-120 cm; its leaves are lanceolate and about 40 cm long and consist of a green, purple shaded, carinate bract with a horizontal growth habit. From the bracts emerges an inflorescence with flowers which are about 15 cm long, with 3 bright orange petals and a blue steml. Strelitzia thrives in sunny places and, especially in winter, can be placed in full sun. It must be thoroughly wet when being watered and the ground-surface must be dry before being watered again. From May to September it is necessary to add to the water a liquid fertilizer every two three weeks and to spray it on the plant avoiding the flowers. Watering will be reduced during the winter but the soil shall not dry out.. Strelitzia needs a very fertile and well drained soil. Propagation is most simply done dividing the clumps of the plant before spring-bloom. The clump is cut in two parts by means of a very sharp knife and divisions are to be planted in different pots .Pests and diseases can be controlled with a fungicide containing sulfur powder. Small young plants are to be kept in a warm and humid place but never in full sun. New roots are generally generated in two months. When roots are generated the plant can be taken care of as mature plants. Bloom will occur after two or three years.
