Appearance

 

  • Growth habit: shrub with deciduous leale which grows to 3 m, and very spiny. The crown is irregular and with dense branching.

  • Leaves: deciduous and compound ( they are compound with three leaflets: one apical leaflet and two smaller side leaflets). They have a small petiole, are leathery and dark green. The blade is ovate with an entire or crenulate margine. They are 2-4 cm long and 1-3 cm wide. The lower surface is paler.

  • Flowers strongly scented hermaphfrodite blossom. The corolla has 5 white petals. Bloom in March.

  • Fruit: rounded, the diameter ranges from 2-3 cm, yellow skinned when ripe. They are not edible, the skin is leathery. Each fruit has 8-15 seeds.

  • Branches: flexible and with a lot of big thorns. Young branches have green stripes, older branches have green-brown stripes.

  • Trunk: straight and quite smooth.

  • Bark: dark greenish-brown and completely smooth.

Habitat

  • Climate:Pponcirus grows in cold-temperate climates and can stand temperatures up to -15°C. It does not like being exposed to the wind.

  • Ground: t the best soil for Poncirus is a middle texture soil. The plant can endure humid soils (it cannot stand water stagnation). It likes a deep soil, with plenty of organic materials and a pH from 6,5 to7,5. Poncirus does not like sandy, chalky or heavy clay soils.

Origin

Poncirus is native to China where it was known and mentioned in papers dating from the 3rd century B.C.
