Appearance

Growth habit: evergreen tree which grows to 6 m, the crown is compact and rounded (globose).

Leaves: simple, petioled, leathery, dark green.The blade is ovate with an entire or crenulate margin. They are 8-12 cm long and 4-8 cm wide. The lower surface is paler.

Flowers: strongly scented hermaphrodite flowers. The corolla has 5 violet-white or white petals and 15-60 stamens. The ovary is compound with 8-15 cells with 4-8 ovules each. First bloom from March to June, second bloom from June to July.

Fruit: ovate, diameter ranging 4 to 8 cm, yellow skinned when ripe. They are eatable with a characteristic not sour flavor.

Branches: flexible and often spiny. Young branches have green stripes, older branches have green-brown stripes.
