Appearance

 

  • Growth Habit: Evergreen tree which grows to 4m. The krown tends to be compact and rounded (globose).

  • Leaves:Simple, petiolated, coriaceous, dark green. The blade is ovate with a crenulate margin. They are 6-10 cm long and 3-6 cm wide. The lower surface is paler.

  • Flowers: Strongly scented hermaphrodite blossom. The corolla has 5 white violet petals and 15-60 stamens. The ovary is compound with 8-15 cells with 4-8 ovules each. In tropical regions the blossom is remontant.

  • Fruit: Ovate-rounded with a diameter of 3-5 cm, green or green-yellow when ripe. They are eatable, have a thin peel and a strong sour taste. They are rather juicy and fragrant with a lot of seeds.

  • Branches: Flexible and often spiny. Young branches have green stripes, older branches have green brown stripes.

  • Trunk: Straight and quite smooth.

  • Bark: dark greenish brown and completely smooth.

Habitat

  • Climate: This plant grows in temperate climates with temperature not below -3 °C and does not like being exposed to the wind (especially to cold winds).

  • Ground: The best soil for Citrus Limetta is loose or middle texture (the plant cannot stand water stagnation), deep, with plenty of organic materials and a pH of 6,5 to7,5. This plant does not like salty, chalky or heavy clay soils.

Origin

The origin of Citrus Limetta is uncertain. It probably comes from China or from the Malay Archipelago.

Spread

This plant is grown especially in South America (Gulf of Mexico), in the Mediterranean Area and in South Asia (Indian Ocean).
