Features

  • Growth Habit: Evergreen tree generally growing to 10 m; the crown tends to be compact and rounded.

  • Leaves: Simple, with winged petiole, leathery, dark green. The blade is ovate and rounded at the base, the margin is entire or finely crenate. They are 8-12 cm long and cm 3-6 wide. The lower surface is brighter.

  • Fruit: Rounded, diameter ranges from 6-10 cm , orange skinned when ripe. They are eatable, sweet and slightly sour when ripe.

  • Flowers: Strongly scented hermaphrodite flowers. The corolla has 5 white petals and 15-60 stamens.; the ovary is compound with 8-.10 cells with 4-8 ovules each. Bloom between April-October.

  • Branches: flexible and often spiny. Young branches have green stripes, old branches have green-brown stripes.

  • Trunk: straight and quite smooth.

  • Bark: dark greenish-brown and completely smooth.

 

Habitat

 

  • Climate: this plant grows in temperate climates with temperature not below -6°C and does not like being exposed to wind (especially to cold wind).

  • Ground: the best soil for sweet oranges is loose or middle texture(the tree cannot stand water stagnation), deep, with plenty of organic materials and with a pH of 6,5 to7,5. The plant does not like salty, chalky or heavy clay soils.

Origin

 

The plant originated in China and can be found in the Mediterranean area since the tenth century.

 

Spread

Sweet oranges are grown all over the world where the climate is suitable. Sweet oranges are cultivated to be consumed fresh and for the production of juices, candied fruit or essential oils.
